Insurance 101

Life insurance is a powerful financial tool that can protect your loved ones, safeguard your assets, and help build a lasting legacy for the next generation. When utilized correctly, it falls into three primary categories—each designed with unique benefits and purposes. At SD Mohn Insurance Services, we believe that policy purpose, design, and precise language are the most critical elements in creating an effective plan. Our experienced team has the expertise to design comprehensive, tailored solutions that align with your goals and secure your financial future. Below, we explain the three main types of life insurance and disability insurance in simple, straightforward terms.

Term life insurance provides pure death benefit protection for a specific period of time (the “term”), typically 10, 15, 20, or 30 years. It is the most affordable form of life insurance and is ideal for covering temporary needs such as a mortgage, raising children, or funding a business loan. If you pass away during the term, your chosen beneficiaries receive the death benefit. If the term ends and you are still living, the policy expires with no cash value, but it can be set up to convert to a whole life or IUL policy that does have cash value.  Term life is straight forward, cost-effective protection when you need the most coverage for the least premium. Consider it as renting a policy.

Indexed Universal Life (IUL) is a flexible permanent life insurance policy that combines a death benefit with a cash value component tied to the performance of a stock market index (such as the S&P 500). It offers the potential for tax-advantaged cash value growth while providing downside protection against market losses. Policyholders can access the cash value through loans or withdrawals for retirement income, college funding, or other needs.  Consider it as owning your policy with the ability to use it as your own personal bank. IUL policies are popular for their flexibility, potential for higher returns than traditional whole life, and ability to build wealth that can be leveraged for generational legacy planning.

Whole Life insurance is a simple, traditional permanent policy that provides lifelong coverage. It features a guaranteed death benefit and builds cash value at a fixed, predictable rate set by the insurance company. Whole life is known for its stability and reliability. The cash value grows tax-deferred and can be accessed for any purpose. Many clients use whole life as a conservative foundation for estate planning, business continuation, or creating a predictable legacy asset that can be passed on to the next generation.  Consider it as an owned policy.

Disability insurance protects your most valuable asset — your ability to earn an income. If you become sick or injured and are unable to work, disability insurance replaces a significant portion of your income (typically 60–70%) so you can continue to support your family and maintain your lifestyle. Unlike life insurance, which pays after you pass away, disability insurance provides monthly income while you are still living. It is especially important for business owners, professionals, and families who rely on earned income.  Working with a professional that understands the language in a policy is extremely important.  A disability policy with proper language will provide an opportunity for future work outside of your current career, while giving tax-efficient protection against the financial impact of a long-term disability.

Long Term Care Insurance helps cover the cost of extended care services needed due to aging, illness, or injury. It pays for assistance with daily activities such as bathing, dressing, eating, and mobility — whether care is received at home, in an assisted living facility, or in a nursing home. Unlike health insurance or Medicare, which focus on medical treatment, long term care insurance protects your savings and assets from the high cost of ongoing care, which can often exceed $8,000–$12,000 per month. This coverage helps preserve your retirement nest egg and the legacy you intend to leave for the next generation.
